DBI Projects Wins ULI NY’s Excellence in Repositioning and Redevelopment Award

November 16, 2020

DBI Projects is thrilled to announce we have been presented with the Urban Land Institute New York’s 2020 Excellence in Repositioning and Redevelopment award for Newlab.

DBI Partner James Neu accepted the award at the ULI’s 2020 Excellence in Development Gala alongside our partners on the project, and we would like to reiterate his wholehearted thank you to ULI NY, the awards committee, and the selection jury for the honor.

Newlab began with a vision for how a deteriorated ship-building facility might find new relevancy as a high-tech hub for entrepreneurs in the city. DBI and Macro Sea led the development and project management from conceptual planning through financing, design, entitlements, construction and completion, and engineered the complex Public-Private Partnership. The team worked to incorporate the building’s rich history, retaining the original steel structure while fitting out the interior with high-tech workspaces for public and private use, meeting rooms, exhibition and event space, and a café.

DBI is so proud to have witnessed all that Newlab has accomplished in the short time since its opening, bringing within its walls over 150 companies focused on frontier technologies and becoming the centerpiece of the Brooklyn Navy Yard’s redevelopment initiative. This has been a success story for Public-Private Partnerships, showing that collaboration and creativity can yield profoundly positive results throughout a community like ours. For this, and for the tireless efforts that went into Newlab’s development, we’d like to thank New Lab Co-Founders David Belt and Scott Cohen.
