Newlab at the Brooklyn Navy Yard
Reviving Brooklyn Navy Yard's Rich History of Innovation
To realize their goal of creating a hub for tech development and innovation in New York City, before Newlab existed, its founders asked DBI to help them transform a historic factory in the Brooklyn Navy Yard into a multi-disciplinary, high-tech design and prototyping center. We led the development and project management of this state-of-the-art space from conceptual planning and financing through completion.
We facilitated every step of the Public-Private Partnership between the developer, property owner, and the State and City of New York, collaborating with the Brooklyn Borough President, New York City Council, and the Economic Development Corporation (EDC).
This project served as the centerpiece of the Navy Yard’s initiative to become a national model for sustainable industrial parks. The space now serves as a hub for a community that includes over 1000 entrepreneurs, engineers, and designers representing over 250 different growth-stage NYC startup companies.
